Around my home & garden

I Must Confess – First Post for August!

I must confess that I have not blogged in a while and in fact this is my first post for August and it is already 11 August!!

I have not been sitting around doing nothing though.  I have been working hard on my photography studies.  I submitted my second last photography assignment and was relieved to get good marks back.

My final photography assignment is a big one which requires me to submit six of my best photographs in one particular field of photography as a portfolio (+ writing up and answering questions etc) and I really want to be able to submit top quality photographs that I am proud of for it.

During the research process for recent assignments, I decided on which particular lenses I would need to do the type of photography I love, and that an upgraded camera would be required.  The camera I have been using is a Nikon D3100 – no longer even entry level as it has been superseded so many times.  The camera I decided on was a Nikon D7100 – a huge improvement on the D3100 and affordable.

The great news is that I recently got my new camera and lenses and I am absolutely thrilled!!  I am very lucky and extremely grateful to now be far better position to move forward with my goals.

The bad news is that I have been sick with a temp and a tummy bug so have not been able to get out and about and have a proper play with them all yet.

I am planning some field trips to acquire a heap of shots with my new gear and hopefully my final six will be within them.  I’ll be going to Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens, Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, Southbank, Brisbane City, and on my own doorstep – the Wynnum Manly waterfront (Moreton Bay) and possibly some day trips away somewhere on some weekends if I can manage it!

In the meantime, here is a sneak peak of what my gorgeous new camera can do … and this is when taken by sick me – just snapping – not really trying – who hasn’t even read the manuals for the camera or the lenses yet (yes each lens comes with its own little booklet of info!).  I am in love!  The difference in quality of photographs is amahhhzzzing!!  I also have a new wide angle lens which I have not had a play with yet.  I can’t wait to see what images I can capture with my new gear!

Sunday Afternoon

My dressing table snapped from my bed.
The window reflects the Sunday afternoon sunlight through the window.
L to R:  A beautiful scarf I won in a Sportscraft competition.
A pot made by the hands of my BFF’s mother for my 50th birthday.
Containers from Asia for my jewellery (my sister was an ex-pat in Asia for 10 years).
A photo of my daughter aged around 3.  The clock part of this frame has not worked in many years.
Slipped into the mirror is some information on the Japanese vase and cups my brother brought back for me from Kyoto.
The rest is jewellery etc (nothing fancy LOL).

Today I have been trying to pretend I am better but I must confess that I am not quite there yet so I will get this published and then toddle off to pop some Panadol and hope that I can get some things done today with a rest or two thrown in! 😉

Today I’m linking up today with Emma of Five Degrees of Chaos for I Must Confess.  Kirsty from My Home Truths who usually hosts is taking a well deserved break.

Ciao for now,

  1. Those macro shots are stunning! What aperture did you use? I’m a Canon girl but I recently bought a 50mm prime too and am loving it! I’ll post some more shots I took with it on Wednesday.

    • Thanks Emma. It’s a 105mm macro and apertures were – geranium shot F3.3; Snapdragons F3.2; Succulent F3. Previously with my old camera and kit lens (18-55mm) I could never get a higher aperture than 5.3. With my new equipment I will have a whole new world! I can’t wait to have a proper play. I’ve never used Canon but I’m sure it’s just as good. I stuck with Nikon since I was used to it and already had one camera body and 2 x kit lenses (the other one being 70-200mm). Look forward to seeing your shots! 🙂

    • Thanks Em! It’s really worthwhile to get to know your camera and how to use it. You will be amazed at what a difference it will make to the photographs you can capture! Lucky you going to ProBlogger. I’ve just had too many expenses to justify buying a ProBlogger ticket sadly!

  2. Glad you love your new camera – and welcome back! I think it’s very healthy to take breaks for blogging from time to time, makes you like it more when you return!

    • Thanks so much Lydia. Yes I think it is healthy to have breaks from blogging too. There is life to be lived so that we can then blog about it. I lose the will to write when I feel too tied to the computer.

  3. Amazing shots! Man my Cannon EOS has been broken since 6 months after I bought it – looking at these I want to get it fixed, but it’s probably not nearly as good as yours anyway. Besides, You got talent lady and a good eye :0)

I’ve been taking unexpceted breaks from blogging and writing – life got a bit in my face since my recent recruitment into the cast-off spouse club. Single mummy-ing takes a bit of getting used to.

When things settle down I’ll have some funny stories to write about; “no you can’t buy me a drink, juniour – I’m a mother!”

    • Oh Suzy so sad to hear your Canon is broken. I’d be lost without my camera. Taking photographs is like therapy for me. It’s my escape and my happy place. I love it! Thank you so much for your compliments! They have made my day! So sorry to hear of your current life changes (unless it is a good thing?). Sounds like you are building a great bundle of blog fodder there! It must be a little bit nice for the ego if some young thing/s is/are hitting on you – even if totally unwanted. Take care! xo

  4. Those pictures are absolutely gorgeous! Good luck with your assessment, although if this is you when you are sick, then you are definitely going to smash it when you get better!

  6. I only have a very basic Canon DSLR and struggle to take it out of auto mode. I’ve signed up for a course but it’s online and I think I really need something that is more hands on.

    • I did a face to face beginners course first up with my DSLR. It was local and there were only 4 of us in the class. It was perfect! I’m sure you’ll find a similar course near you! Good luck! 🙂 xo

  7. Amazing shots Min! I voted this morning in your poll too. I think it is such a great idea that you are taking your name Marguerite for your photography business. It’s such a beautiful name that inspires creativity.

    • Hi Lisa – sorry to hear you are unwell also. I went to the doc today and am now on antacids. It seems I have some sort of reflux, possible stomach ulcer, mixed with a viral bug. Lovely! Really hope you feel better soon! Thanks for the compliment on my photo’s and for visiting and commenting 🙂 xo
