The last day in my 40’s

Well hello there!

Today is the very last day I will be forty anything!  Yep – tomorrow I turn the big 5-0.  I’m not going to lie, it feels very strange, but I think I am ready for it.

So what have I done with myself on this very last day of my 40’s.

I was awake very early, like around 4:30am, so got up for awhile but went back to bed later and had a little lie in.  Late morning there was a knock on the door and there was a lady delivering some beautiful flowers to me!  They were tulips – my favourite!  They were from a very dear friend.  The card contained beautiful words.  I was so touched.  What a wonderful way to start the day! 🙂

Next, I went to lunch with two of my sisters, one of whom is visiting from Sydney for the weekend.  We went to a little local Mexican restaurant.  It was very nice.  Then we went back to my sister’s house for coffee.  One of my sister’s gave me an early birthday present (one of three she has apparently) and when I opened the card, I was taken aback when I saw the words Happy 50th Birthday!!  We all sort of looked at each other and thought ….

Well not yet … I’m still only 49 … but tomorrow … !!

It only seems like a short time ago that I threw a 50th birthday party for my mother.  I was married and living in our second home which we had built.  We had no children yet.  I remember thinking – oh dear poor mum is getting old!  How very, very wrong I was!  I would have been in my mid 20’s and how naive I was because now that I’m here – well nearly here – I can tell you that it is not old!  If any of you think that 50 is old this is what I have to say to you, with the best educational intentions and most generous of heart of course!

Which is not much at all is it!!

So as I said, yes I am ready for this.  I am ready to enter my 50th decade.  I have been pondering this ever since I passed half way in my 40’s – so probably since I was 45/46.  Lots of time to prepare myself.  These are things that make this transition easier:

  1. I’m grateful to still be alive to turn 50!  Not everyone is so lucky.  The alternative to reaching 50 is not an option I would choose!
  2. The pressure is off.  I don’t need to be perfectly trim, toned and terrific anymore.  I don’t expect this from myself anymore.
(though I really do need to lose some weight!)
  3. My kids are getting older now so I can put a little more focus on myself and indulging in my dreams.  For example –   (1) I’ve an exciting new photography business to build, and (2)  I’ve a new blog concept in mind.
  4. Now the kids are older – there is more freedom to do little trips away AND we have built in puppy sitters!
  5. and loads more things…

So all in all, I’d say this is a pretty awesome phase of life to have reached!  I am so looking forward to all the adventures it will offer me!  As this t-shirt says – 1964 was THE year and I am now at my peak – aged to perfection – ready for my Act 2 of life!

So friends, the next time you hear from me, I will have entered my decade of vintage perfectionism.  Ahhh what great times lie ahead!  Tomorrow night I am having dinner with family and my childhood friend will be there (remember Kiki ?).  On Tuesday hubby and I are off for three nights in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.  Bring on Act 2!

    • Thanks Rae! I’m not worrying ’bout menopause till I have to LOL I already have weird things going on so I’m probably peri-menopausal. Gotta keep positive about it all. What goes on in the mind affects the body 😉 xo

    • Thank you! I look forward to hearing about your celebrations next year. Some have told me 50 is the new 40 and others have told me 50 is the new 30!! Maybe I’ll opt to believe the latter LOL xo

  5. I’m fast approaching the big 5 0. In August I’ll turn 50 and my sons will be18 and 21. To be quite honest I’m feeling quite confronted. It feels like a very significant milestone and a a major point in my life. Grown up family and all of a sudden an urge to say “Hello World. This is ME.”

One part of me is acknowledging and saying farewell to roles and responsibilities and social expectations and the other side is saying “Bring it on. Time to party.” (Well get playful and ‘do’ things I’ve had on hold for years.)

Oh and did mention I’ll celebrating in NYC with a couple of friends for a few weeks. Women only!

    Thanks for the uplifting post.
